Garmin Forerunner 910XT Takes Tri and Ultra Marathon Racing Data To A New Place

The new Garmin Forerunner 910XT was effectively introduced on the eve of the World Ironman Championship in Hawaii. This new top of the line Garmin triathlon watch will certainly be reviewed and re-reviewed from the commentators for several months but, because its predecessor the Garmin Forerunner 310XT is the most effective triathlon watch in the world it didn’t need to make improvements to much to support its lead.

Functions like real-time speed as well as distance, bike cadence, run turnover (with foot pod), power output (with ANT+ watts meter), pulse rate, calories expended, vibration notifications, eating and drinking alerts, being watertight, and having the longest battery life from any GPS fitness watch are part of the pedigree with the predecessor – the Forerunner 310XT.

Naturally, everyone is curious to know what new features the Garmin 910XT has over the Garmin 310XT. The main feature additions are as follows:
1.) It is several millimeters thinner than the 310XT
2.) It has a Run/Walk feature allows for run and walk alternation for longer runs
3.) Barometric altimeter should allow for greater elevation and percentage gradient accuracy
4.) Power meter data now supports Training Stress Factor, Intensity Factor and Normalized Power plus left/right power through the new Garmin Vector pedal power
5.) Pool swim features that include laps, strokes and distance plus openwater swim features that include strokes and GPS measured distance
6.) BAnd attachments are sturdier
7.) The back of the unit can twist/lock onto a traditional Garmin bike computer mount (way cool)

As with many tools, you can do so many things with these GPS watches that you may literally drive yourself loco and go Adhd during this process. That’s why we’re feeling it is advisable to focus regarding the sports you will be undertaking and the details you wish to observe. The displays for the Garmin Forerunner 910XT are remarkably customizable and can permit you to display four data fields per screen with 4 screens per sport, if you need that many.

The biggest thing that Garmin did not do with the brand new Forerunner 910XT was allow it to become touch screen navigation, that truly astonished us given the fact that their very own most current product additions intended for cyclists, the Garmin Edge 800, and joggers, the Garmin Forerunner 610, were both touchscreen display devices. Perhaps Garmin was basically scared how they would have no projected obsolescence and wouldn’t be able to trump it for a long time. To a certain degree this is what Garmin did six years in the past when they launched the FR305 but in the last few years its capabilities have been surpassed however it still has an exceptionally dedicated base.

Of course once you are done exercising you can transfer your details to Garmin software utilizing the USB stick and Garmin’s transfer software program.

THE MOBILE DOWNLOAD ALTERNATIVE:

If you have an iphone then we sell an excellent approach to accommodate uploading your workouts to your iPhone and then upload the .csv data files to Garmin software. Any Fisica Sensor Key through the folks at Wahoo Fitness. This just plugs into the data port on virtually any iPhone and then will immediately pair with and browse ANT+ suitable gadgets, like the Garmin 910XT – Yahoo for Wahoo!!

This is simply brilliant for people that fly a lot but like to maintain their exercise sessions current.

Of course triathlon competitors are not the only groups of users that will find the Forerunner 910XT appealing. We’ve previously used these devices for skiing out of bounds, mountain climbing, mountain biking, down river kayaking, trekking, alpine skiing, nordic skiing, and rollerblading – we did not make the cut for “Dancing With The Stars” or we may have donned one there also.

What you find with GPS units – watches and cycling devices particularly because of their scaled-down dimensions – is that you start taking them around for even more and more diverse recreation. The mapping of the mileage in addition to the analytics is unbelievable (see the chart below).

Our primary thought on the new Garmin Forerunner 910XT is that it corrected a number of lesser issues with what was arguably already the best triathlon watch on the planet. This implies that the competitors are now that much further away.

Polar FT4 Crowned Top Heart Rate Monitor Under One Hundred Dollars

In a recent press release the Heart Rate Watch Company designated the Polar FT4 its number one heart monitor for under one hundred dollars for 2011.

“The foregoing was an easy choice since there are actually not any other exercise watches that offer this standard of functions for less than $100″ said Rusty Squire , President of the Heart Rate Watch Company. Patented heart detecting material technology is used within the strap significantly improving the correct fit, heart touch know-how enables users to switch screens without the need of ever continually pushing control buttons and absolutely no other company will be as well incorporated with the exercise equipment producers.

In October 2011 Polar is adding a couple of exciting new colors to the FT4 stable – pink and purple to the ladies and also black with orange with the guys. If these new designs are far too racy for you personally then you can definitely go back to the original black and silver for men in addition to bronze for ladies.

Exclusive to Polar is a graphic heart rate zone indicator that shows your heart rate on a graph and both ends within your heart rate zone as ending points on that graph. The following truly helps you remain targeted on remaining in your own specific zones and not one other heart rate monitor under $100 offers this particular function. Needless to say audible alerts will also help keep you on target so there are numerous ways in which Polar gives you to customize the device to satisfy your needs.

The Polar FT4 also showcases your own calorie consumption instantly throughout your exercise routine and utilizes automatic heart rate zones which help you boost your depth throughout the exercise routine.

This watch is ultimately designed for exercise enthusiasts who are interested in heart rate monitoring, improving their workouts and calorie counting. The FT4 does not move exercise information to Polar Personal Trainer software therefore if that’s a very important characteristic you should think about the Polar FT7.

Another thing that makes Polar special is the 2 year manufacturer’s warranty. Most heart monitor watches just offer a one year guarantee but because Polar is a Finnish company, and a member of the EU, it provides a two year warranty.

Polar created the heart monitor during the 1970′s and this has permitted them to gain plenty of valuable feedback from personal trainers, professional athletes and customers to produce the most effective capabilities in the industry. Polar also delivers high quality training videos for your Polar FT4 which help users get started effortlessly and it is training resources such as this that help users get a much better understanding. It is this kind of dedication toward developing products which satisfy prospective customers needs that has really set Polar a step above other fitness watch companies.

“We make use of a dozen distinct device manufacturers however for pure functions it’s tough to think of any other producer which comes close to Polar in the area of heart rate based devices” say Squire.

Squire says, “This is the reason why we’re extremely pleased to bestow upon the FT4 our 2011 heart monitor of the year for the category of best heart rate monitor under $100″.

The Running Watch That Looks Everyday – The New Timex Ironman Run Trainer

Alright, so I’m going to be honest, I’ve been a bit suspect with the Timex GPS products up until now, although with the brand new Timex Run Trainer I do believe they have once and for all hit the bullseye. Basically by suitable I am talking about built-in GPS, not the dimensions of a small cooler, resembles an every day wrist watch, carries with it an affordable price point, does not take 5 minutes to receive satellites as well as combines by means of Training Peaks Online Log.

Thanks to Timex planning to release Ironman Run Trainer in the Fall of 2011 and provide a $200 and under running GPS this particular watch seems positioned to perform this Christmas.

Electronic Timers Galore

The newest Timex Run Trainer will give you up to 5 programmable repeating electronic timers with labels. The actual Ironman Run Trainer also offers a recovery timer with a user defined time-span, which looks like a reasonably cool feature. We certainly have consistently preached measuring recuperation to see exactly how conditioning has improved.

An Exciting New and Upgraded Softer Strap

The modern Flextech Digital strap offers 2.4 mHz signal and is ANT+ suitable. This particular chest strap is far more pleasant than the older Timex rubber and plastic chest bands, and yes it is significantly lighter in weight, making a real upgrade for running enthusiasts of most types.

Additionally, there are programmable hydration and nutrition timers if you wish to get reminded about this type of thing.

Download Your Data

It is possible to transfer your data by using a enclosed USB cable which also works as a recharging device. All GPS monitors use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries because they use up a lot of power acquiring transmission. The included connector cable allows you to make full use of Training Peaks Online Log by just attaching Device Agent to your Run Trainer.

Just How Long Does The Battery Survive

Timex promises the battery pack will last 9 working hours with a single charge. Considering the skinnier profile with this new watch we’re depending upon more like 7 to 8 continuous hours but we are going to find out more once we get a chance to test it for real.

The claimed battery life definitely makes the monitor well suited for marathons however it could easily get cut a little short on ultra runs of over eight hours. For this particular kind of running you’ll definitely be wiser to look at the Global Trainer GPS. This holds true for long course triathalon where the Timex Global Trainer will be your best choice.

The Qualified Verdict

When all is said and done the Timex Run Trainer competes directly with the Garmin 210, yet at a slightly lower price level. Training Peaks Online record won’t carry out every one of the advanced mapping functions and elevation features with the Garmin Connect software program, so there is certainly nonetheless this struggle between price point as well as features. The software platform is one of the most essential points to consider when buying a training device and still it is often one of the least considered factors from the buying public.

This unique new watch is loaded with lots of good stop watch and timing capabilities, as Timex watches frequently do. The brand new better GPS acquisition and better chest strap should make this GPS watch one of the most interesting new watch from Timex in years.

We just got the new Polar RCX5 Bike and Run watches in last week. We had to ship out a ton of them but there were a couple left over, therefore I immediately began to tinker.

5 Distinct Heart Rate Zones and Configurable Display

Why Learning and Adjusting Is a Process

We go through all types of rigorous testing but much of it has to last for months. Anybody who thinks that a tester using a product for a few days can give you the full drill is mistaken. It takes months to find all the capacities and quirks. I’m still learning new things on my Garmin Edge 800 every week and I have been using it for 4 months.

Fitness electronics today are very sophisticated and have an abundance of features and measurements, often too many for one mind to comprehend. This is where you have to narrow it down to what is important to you, the metrics, and learn those functions, first and foremost, to arrange your displays to correspond to what’s important.

Polar RCX5 Fit

My best barometer for a new product is to put it on the wrist of my wife. She is very petite, with 5 ¼ to 5 ½ inch wrist, so it gives me a sense of what women think.

When she put on the Polar RCX5 she said, “It is so light and I really like the large display”. It’s true the RCX5 weighs about 35% less than the new Garmin 610 GPS. GPS watches with their larger lithium-ion rechargeable battery requirements are never going to be as light as a standard watch.

Polar RCX5 on 5 inch woman wrist

The double set of band clasps also make it nice for women because when you have to pull the band through the metal clasp past a lot of holes to get it to fit there is a lot of extra band left over. It is nice to be able to secure this excess band in more than one location, which is precisely what double clasps were intended to do.

The profile of the RCX5 is also very slender, which was very sleek. This is the best looking watch Polar has ever designed in our opinion and the fact that the majority of the face is nothing but screen makes it all the more enjoyable.

Initial Start-Up Sequence

Push any button to turn on the watch. There are five button locations as pictured below- an Up, Down, Back, Light and the red center control button.

The first thing the watch wants to know is what language you would like to speak. Just highlight the desired language and push the large, red center button to select.
The watch walks you right through the whole setup process and it is quite easy. Just use the up and down buttons to highlight the desired field. The watch gets all of your biometric parameters loaded in and then it is time to go train.

Let’s Go Run, Bike, Swim, or Other Sport

Run Mode

Swim Mode

Once you have completed the start up sequence you can use the large red center button to advance from sport to sport depending upon what you are doing that day. The choices are run, swim, bike and other sport.

It is pretty cool that Polar thought of this other sport option because the five custom heart rate zones you can use for each sport are going to vary depending upon what you are participating in.

Cycling Mode

Other Sports Mode

You’ll find that you can get your heart rate higher at some sports, so using the same zones for every sport does not make sense.

The icon driven sport selection process is very nice and super easy to understand. Just hit the big red button to advance between sports. You check out the images of the various screens in the photos below.

You can customize many fields on your watch for each event. For swimming it is pretty straight forward because the only measurement is heart rate but on the bike you have speed and cadence sensors and wheel size to add. You can also set up for multiple bikes. Plus, you can add the G5 GPS sensor for the run, the bike or the swim. For the swim you will have to keep it waterproof and under the cap as the new G5 is not waterproof. I know other reviewers have shown the G5 getting wet and said that it works however Polar does not recommend it. If, and when, they do recommend it we’ll let you know.

The New S3 Plus Stride Sensor

Polar recently completed a makeover on the S3 Stride sensor’s attachment system. This new system attaches very firmly to the shoes laces but, it does require laces to hold it in place. It weighed 28.5 grams on our postal scale meaning that in imperial units it is just barely more than 1 ounce, certainly not enough weight to worry much about.

Polar RCX5 Footpod in Action

Several four lap miles at the local University track showed variations of 27 and 15 yards respectively, certainly not enough error to be very concerned about. This would be about ¼ mile for the entire length of a marathon.

The S3 is important and very different from other foot pod devices which strictly measure speed and distance. The S3 actually looks at cadence and turnover to help you develop a more efficient stride, which is what becoming more efficient as a runner is about.

Training software

The RCX5 synchronizes with Polar personal trainer software but there is a very, very important piece of software you will need to download at the Polar personal trainer website called Polar WebSync. This piece of software allows you to wirelessly synchronize data between Polar personal trainer and the training computer watch unit.
Here is a link that will allow you to set-up Polar Websync on your computer – Get Polar Websync here!

This is important because it allows you to move data both ways – from the watch to the computer and from the computer to the watch. This allows you to upload customized training to the RCX5.

The Polar personal training software has been recently upgraded significantly to account for the usage of triathlon competitors and to accommodate the training load factor. You can either let the software customize your training based upon your biometric parameters, or you can customize it yourself.

Training Load

As the RCX5 begins to understand your body from exercise and fitness tests it begins to make a more accurate assessment of your training load, or cumulative training activities.

The upgraded personal trainer software will help you develop training calendars and develop training programs with advanced training analysis. This will help you train more scientifically and insure that you dial in your training program to meet tour larger goals.

Weaknesses

If you train with power, or watts output, cycling then this training computer watch will not meet your requirements. Other than this one detail it is hard to think of a metric that it does not measure.

Our only wish list item on features would be a vibration alert. It is nice to have when environmental noise makes it difficult to hear audible alerts when you are near freeways or going fast on the bike.

Summary

Hybrid Chest Strap

The Polar RCX5 Run package is certainly among the top running watches available on the market today from either the GPS or foot pod categories.

Heart rate based training using anaerobic threshold is still the best methodology by which to improve your running and for these purposes this watch has all the tools when combined with the S3 foot pod and Polar personal trainer software.

The versatility of this watch further allows you to cross-train at any sport and access to data that is unique for that sport to analyze your performance. The ease of switching between sports makes for one of the best multi-sport user interfaces that we have ever tested.

The capability of this watch to gather heart rate data for swimming is unique thanks to Polar’s Hybrid Wearlink, a dual frequency chest strap that bridges this gap that was present in the RS800 series watches.

It is hard to imagine a multi-sport athlete or triathlon competitor that would not want to get their hands on one of these.

It is almost hard to say enough good things about the new Garmin Forerunner 610. It is a GPS watch with heart rate monitor and the first ever with touch screen navigation capabilities.

Embrace The New Garmin Forerunner 610

These are the complete contents of Garmin 610 unloaded

Garmin has always been the leader in integrated GPS watch technology but this latest top-of-the-line running and cycling watch has added numerous upgrades in the heart rate area as well. For instance, there is a new training load factor that considers your cumulative training and the state of your body to help you adjust your training.

In our initial testing the biggest single improvement was not related to what this watch measures but how it displays it. The vertical arrangement of lines separating the metrics makes them so much easier to read than ever before. It is an odd little discovery that has made a world of difference when it comes to ease of use.

What does the Garmin Forerunner 610 lack?

Two things really: 1.) It does not have enough battery life to go beyond 7 hours in once session, so it is not an ultra-marathon or long course triathlon watch, and 2.) it does not display power output on the bike like the Garmin 310XT does. This means that the Garmin 310XT gets to keep its title as the triathlon and ultra watch.

Out of the Box

Pulling the Garmin 610 out of the box it is noticeable that several things have changed from previous versions. First, the watch has a much more slender profile and the backing is made of a much more anatomical shape making this the best fitting Garmin ever in our opinion. Gone are the wing extensions that made the 405 and 410 a much more difficult fit. Gone is the need to have a second Velcro strap to create the right fit for larger and smaller wrists. This watch has corrected Garmin’s “fit problems”.

The new battery charging cable is curved and snaps on to the back of the watch. A word of caution: Snap the charger onto the watch before plugging in or you can get shocked. It is a bit different than the old claw clip.
to move your data on to your favorite training software. One of the really nice things about all Garmin fitness products is their Mac compatibility. Polar has Mac compatibility on its new RCX5 watch and Suunto is still struggling to become Mac compatible, so Garmin is the obvious choice in fitness watches for Mac users.

Our unit must have been partially charged because it was charged in a few minutes fresh out of the box, but, somewhere between one hour and 90 minutes is a good bet when the battery is low.

From left to right: Garmin 610, 310XT, 410, 210 and 110

Training Videos That Help

Don’t forget to watch the great training videos done by Jake at Garmin. You can watch those videos here. Garmin and Polar both offer training video resources which are very helpful for getting up to speed on your new purchase.

The big advantage for touch screen is just how fast it allows you to navigate. This technology is so much faster than buttons that you may never go back to a traditional watch again. Forgetting about bezel, or button based, navigation is real easy once you’ve used the 610.

It also takes a very deliberate push of the screen icons to get them to change. This is a good thing because it means that unintentional screen brushes and bumps will not change anything. This is precisely why there is no locking feature required with this watch.

The Fit of Garmin Forerunner 610

The Forerunner 610 has the most slender profile of any GPS watch

This watch truly has the most slender profile of any GPS watch ever made. From base to top the 610 measured 1.4 centimeters while the Garmin 410 measured 1.6 centimeters. The 610 is modestly heavier at 3 ounces, compared with 2.5 ounces for the 410.

The weight difference is likely attributable to the steel cased backside of the 610 which should add greater durability to this watch over the 410. This watch just has that solid feel to it from the moment you put it on and not like it came out of a Chinese cost-cutting production line.

The Forerunner 405 and 410 both had rigid wings protruding outward as part of the band structure. This was problematic because the watches only fit one size of wrist well while small wrists had side gaps and large wrists had a watch that hovered above the wrist. This is why Garmin had Velcro bands, along with the ease of removal.

The 610 no longer contains these rigid wings and would fit small wrists, like my wife Elaine who is only 5 ½ inches circumference. That is a photo of her wrist below with the 610 attached and we did not notice the gaps that she had with the 410 or 405. Hurray, gaps are gone.

These are the complete contents of Garmin 610 unloaded

The watch doesn’t look like a behemoth on a petite wrist either, like the Garmin 410 or 310XT can. Granted it does not come in the latest spring colors from Paris, but it doesn’t look abnormal, or out of place, on a woman’s wrist either. The girls can wear this GPS.

What Should We Do Today

People always try to pigeonhole Garmin as just a runner’s watch, but the 610 is equally adept at cycling, inline skating, hiking, skiing and other sports thanks to a cycling mode that displays speed in miles, or kilometers, per hour. This is pretty handy because you can use the cycling mode for just about everything except running and hiking.

Garmin Forerunner 610 displays time and date, and metric screen.

Who This Is For, What This Is For

Unless you run ultra-marathons, or are on the trail for over 7 to 8 hours at a crack, then this watch should be fine for your needs. Battery life expires between 7 and 8 hours of use.

This watch is not for swimming and it is not a triathlon watch unless you want to leave it on the bike for a sprint or half-Ironman race. It isn’t suitable for a full Ironman because of battery constraints.

The Garmin 310XT is the watch for swimmers, ultra-runners and long course triathlons.

This watch is suitable for runners, cyclists, mountain bikers, skiers and other outdoor athletes who want great data and mapping in activities that last from 1 to 8 hours in duration.

Garmin Forerunner 610 is suitable for these sports.

GPS is not perfectly accurate for altitude because it is not a finely honed barometric altimeter – no watch is. Being off 20 to 100 feet on a big climb is not unusual, being off hundreds of feet is. It is still a nice indicator of the amount of climbing and descending you have done.

We noticed the climbing and descending features with the Garmin Edge 800 but it will drive you crazy if you start and finish at the same point because it never seems that the amount of climbing perfectly corresponds to the amount of descending – such is the case for all GPS measured vertical distance.

Running Test

Wireless USB transfers your data to Garmin Connect software

When it comes to maps and a mapping community, Garmin Connect is awesome software. It is like a Facebook for runners, cyclists and triathlon competitors who want to share routes, times, and more.

There are two types of technology that can give you speed and distance data running:

foot pods (also called accelerometers) and

GPS. The nice thing about GPS is the fact that it accurately maps, through a process called geo-caching and also maps altitude. For road running this is a key feature.

Ryan Hall used a Forerunner 210 when he did a blistering 2:04 in the Boston Marathon in April of 2011. This is a pure runner’s watch with no ability to shift in to a cycling or other sports, it is purely running all the way and uses a button driven navigation system.

The new charging clip snaps onto the back of the watch

The vibration alert is really helpful running. When you are really into it and focused on your stride, posture, breathing and arm swing, there is not a lot of time to be looking at your watch, which is what makes the vibration alert so useful. If you violate heart rate zones or pacing goals the watch gives you a gentle buzz. This is really useful as your parameters become better defined and for fine tuning your training.

The ability to observe your courses and mountain charts to see precisely how you were doing at the top of a big hill is part of what makes Garmin Connect so useful. Drag the icon to the top of a big hill and freeze it to see your heart rate. Drag it one-quarter mile past the summit to observe your recovery. It is pretty cool stuff.

The new Training Effect feature is also very useful for running because it examines your cumulative training and observes your recovery to help analyze and adjust your training. It takes a week or more in the Training Effect mode for the watch to get to know your body and your training so this feature is not immediately useful.

The fact that you do not have to have all sorts of other sensors like foot pods is nice. The learning curve to the watch, like anything new, will take about a week of use but watching the training videos can really help with the initial set-up.

Pacing goals can be established by using the Virtual Partner or Virtual Racer features. Both functions allow you to compete against a pre-established pace.

Cycling Test

This is how the 610 looks mounted on a Garmin bike mount

I love watches for cycling. Especially mountain biking where the constant jarring can dislodge most bike computer mounts. A watch strapped around a handlebar mount is not going anywhere, even if you and the bike become separated.

Cycling watches give you a true duality of purpose in that they act as more than just a bike computer, they can serve as a daily heart rate monitor and wrist watch too, so it eliminates the need to own multiple devices.

The 610 syncs up with a cadence sensor and can display your speed in miles, or kilometers, per hour. It does lack the ability to pick up power meters like the 310XT, so for hard core triathlon competitors and road cyclists that train based upon power this watch is not a good solution.

If you would like heart rate data, speed, distance, mapping, cadence and elevations then the 610 could make a good cycling companion. It might not fit the bill for serious road bikers but it is great for the semi-serious road cyclists and mountain bikers of all levels.

Unlike the Garmin Edge 800, which measures inclination, or percentage grade, the 610 does not possess this feature.

Summary

We feel that the Garmin 610 is the most innovative new watch product for runners for 2011 and that it also makes a good cycling watch. Swimmers and triathlon competitors will have to look elsewhere and ultra-marathon participants need to consider the Garmin 310XT for its battery life.

Initial buyer comments have been generally quite good, however one small female noted that the watch just was not a good fit for her and that it felt heavy (it is 3 ounces).

The touch screen navigation requires a little learning but the way this watch displays metrics and data is among the best we have found.

A heart monitor is a complex device that needs an expert, however most big box retailers as well as large online shopping malls would like you to imagine heart rate monitors are a commodity. This is just plain wrong and without the presence of proper resources you won’t attain the best functionality from these devices.

The Heart Rate Monitor Blog talks to a large number of fitness enthusiasts each year concerning heart rate monitors. In our experience these represent the mistakes you have to steer clear of to obtain the best solution.

PITFALL No. 1 – Not Really Getting Rid Of Sales Staff Who Don’t Understand The Device

You go into a big box sporting goods retailer that carries above ten thousand products and then the person helping you out just got done marketing camping tents, firearms, sport fishing equipment and backpacking footwear – All The Best! Lisa recommends questioning them about the transmitting frequency from the monitor and whether it functions in the pool. “If they can’t help answer that query, you’ll want to go elsewhere” says Lisa.

PITFALL No. 2 – Bypassing Strapped Monitors As A Result Of Imagined Comfort Concerns

Old fashioned upper body straps were made from plastic materials or rubber that was ungainly and often less than enjoyable. “Modern upper body straps are made from completely adaptable heart-sensing materials and sensors which are supple” says Lisa. At Heart Rate Monitor Blog we advise hundreds of fitness enthusiasts each season to stick to secured heart rate monitors versus strapless because they are a lot more accurate and produce significantly higher quality information.

PITFALL #3 – Not Receiving An Assurance That There Is A Manufacturer’s Warranty

Customers contact companies for selling price matches constantly, nonetheless, most of these individuals are not aware the fact that the company’s they are looking for a price match on are not sanctioned sellers. Why so much interest? It’s important since some suppliers only provide warranty privileges to consumers who buy from approved dealers. “Most folks don’t realize that comparison shopping engines, like Amazon, represent a cover for illegal dealers” says Lisa. These are exactly the same frustrated purchasers who e-mail us 6 months later with a faulty unit and want to know what they can do about it. The answer is that they really should have completed more homework and visited the manufacturer’s site to understand their policies.

PITFALL No. 4 – Not Buying At A Company That Delivers Training Resources

This may be the largest oversight of all. Hardly any vendors supply these kinds of learning resource applications to their own customers. Garmin and Polar offer superb product training video clips but exactly where can you obtain firmware updates or immediate proficiency to reply to issues? This type of information is only able to be produced by way of a really knowledgable expert and there are a very restricted quantity of them.

Garmin has got some superb education video clips on its new Garmin Forerunner 610 touch screen GPS watch and also Polar heart rate monitors supply dozens of excellent training videos on their watch versions.

PITFALL No. 5 – Strictly Examining Selling Price

Buyers often forget to look at shipping charges, sales tax rates and other very important aspects. Even while State sales taxes as well as delivery costs tend to be immediate costs, there are more indirect expenses, like toll-free access to actual device gurus, how warranties are taken care of, and just how returned items are handled. “Evaluating the actual total price and extent of the service is what buyers really need to be working on”, says Lisa. Unfortunately, cost comparison search engines have educated buyers to shop on nothing but price, which is fine if you are purchasing a CD but with almost everything necessitating greater product knowledge this can be a big blunder.

PITFALL #6 – Acquiring Old, Outdated Products

So many people don’t look at the manufacturer’s internet site to discover exactly what the company is currently advertising. Often times large retail stores and comparison shopping engines inventory older, outdated products that the manufacturer will not be even merchandising anymore. Typically, newer models with a lot more advanced functions and enhancements can be obtained however the buyer gets trapped “holding the bag” on older, dated merchandise because nobody spelled out all the options to them.

Clasp the seat belts and prepare yourself to get totally amazed! You see, the very first touchscreen display GPS watch and also hrm is here and it is known as the Garmin 610.

We have received tons of knowledge about Garmin’s touchscreen display screen navigation already due to the fact we sponsor a cycling squad and Heart Rate Watch Company employees are already making use of the Garmin Edge 800, therefore, the Garmin 610 will probably be a game changer, we are able to guarantee you that. This particular technological innovation totally gets rid of problem-prone bezel control and is also going to combine a number of major new features, including Garmin’s Virtual Racer, Training Effect as well as interval automation.

HOW SOON CAN I GET ONE?

The Garmin Forerunner 610 is planned to be introduced at the Boston Marathon in April of 2011 and will be readily available by way of our dealership shortly thereafter. Our own advice would be to pre-order now because these watches will likely be red hot.

CHARCTERSITICS, FEATURES AND MORE ATTRIBUTES

There’s no doubt that the Garmin 610 engineers were reading our thoughts the moment they developed this one since it contains each and every characteristic and attribute that we appreciate.

The vibratory notifications that enable you to fully understand once you have exceeded, or gone below, an alarm so you can jog, or bicycle, using your iPod yet still understand what is going on. It includes the second velcro-band intended for multisport athletes. This GPS watch does velocity in minutes per mile, or kilometers, for runners and will do pace in mph for cyclists.

Naturally the 610 can measure speed, distance, pulse rate, state-of-the-art caloric calculation and all the features you have begun to assume. It will also synchronize with the pedal cadence sensing unit for bicycling.

Right here is the major news flash for multisport participants: A Garmin Forerunner 610 can be used using a additional battery that is solar power charged to charge the watch if you are not close to power for multi-day events.

The new Training Effect feature calculates your level of intensity to help endurance athletes workout more effectively. Additionally, there is also a new Virtual Racer function that allows you to contest previous best times on particular courses and routes that will show what distance and time ahead, or behind, pace you are the whole distance.

Here is a comprehensive functions listing:

Item Specifications and Features:

Today’s running watches most often mix heart monitors utilizing GPS watch technologies or even utilize foot pods to calculate speed along with mileage. They are important developments with the running watch because it is the relationship involving speed and also heart rate that’s most important for every runner to completely recognize.

Instead, what we are seeking is the perfect velocity given the mileage reduced straight into a minutes per mile pace. Ideally this specific speed will keep you underneath your anaerobic tolerance inside a functionally performance zone where by it is supportable. Start out too quickly and you will risk O2 indebtedness and lactic acid accumulation.

The GPS watch is beginning to become a chosen instrument by numerous runners, despite the fact that many of the more advanced foot pod-centered devices including the Polar RS800sd and also the Suunto t6d are on the list of the finest running watches we’ve screened. As a result, there’s two types of running watch – the GPS watch and also the foot pod class watches.

GPS Watches Examined

Garmin has got the lead at this stage in GPS watch technology with the new Garmin Forerunner 410 and the Forerunner 310XT, nonetheless Timex just lately released the Timex Global Trainer which is a close substitute to the Forerunner 310XT. All three of these monitors include up-to-the-minute pacing data, pulse rate, tempo and distance using 1/100th of a mile. Personalized interval training and vibratory, along with audible, notifications will be the standard with the Forerunner 310XT and the Timex Ironman Global Trainer. The Garmin Forerunner 410 only includes audible notifications however has the rest of the functions.

Considering the advance of advancements within the GPS SIRF 3 and SIRF 4 chip technological innovation, reception is rarely a issue anymore. What the majority of runners frequently like concerning GPS watches is that you need a unitary item with the wrist unit without any extra parts and you get all your data.

The very minor issue with GPS is probably battery life, which generally runs about thirteen to fourteen hours with the Garmin 310XT as well as Timex Global Trainer, and the Forerunner 110 will last about 8 hours. For all day-to-day training and also marathons this type of life of the battery might be more than sufficient. For full course triathalon and ultra-distance runners you’ll want to keep with the actual Garmin 310XT and Timex Global Trainer.

There exists a learning curve to these more advanced GPS watches nonetheless it adds value with an extraordinary selection of details that will really allow you to advance your performance.

For those seeking pace, distance and pulse rate within a much easier to work with bundle think about the Garmin Forerunner 210 as well as the Forerunner 110. These watches are extremely an easy task to manage, create superb routes along with excellent fundamental facts with the help of ease-of-use, remaining the true secret watch term. A Garmin Forerunner 110 as well as the Forerunner 210 do not contain the Virtual Partner up-to-the-minute pacing function so serious, competing runners may want to keep with slightly more sophisticated models.

Accelerometer Watches

The absolute best in the class of foot pod centered running watches will be the Suunto t6d and the Polar RS800sd. These devices deliver precise speed, mileage, heart rate and also pacing information. Each of them have light weight accelerometers (somewhere between thirty and fifty grams), which typically get attached in the shoelaces of your running sneakers.

The RS800sd includes the S3 pace sensor foot pod which inturn goes further than simply measuring pace and also distance and looks at gait along with other stride elements to give suggestions on stride enhancement. With its altimeter, the RS800sd calculates vertical climbing and descending along with velocity, mileage, caloric burn, multiple heart rate zones, as well as a huge array of functions. You are able to additionally monitor and determine the usefulness of your workouts by easily transfering your own training sessions to Polar professional training software, which comes along with a CD together with the device.

Any Suunto t6d provides all of the functions you’d anticipate coming from a superb running specific watch and another unique measurement referred to as post exercise O2 usage, or EPOC.

Alpine downhill skiing can be a very high intensity sport which demands lots of strength conditioning with a lesser component of aerobic conditioning. You must be able to measure your own recuperation after the intense anaerobic effort represented by a ski run and using a device such as a heart rate monitor will likely assist you to measure your recuperation as well as see fitness improvements.

Using heart rate monitors during such a sporting activity is actually very easy: At the time you begin to cease recovering down to a fully recovered heart rate zone it is about time to take a break.

Regarding intense dryland training including stair sprints, sprints or even lifting this activity requires heart monitors that can alert you personally when you have appropriately recovered to commence your subsequent, or your next, set of weights. This sort of all-out exercise takes your own heart rate from close to recuperated levels to extremely upper thresholds near your maximum heart rate.

For a casual skier wishing to get in better conditioning for the season these heart monitors assist to guide you to accumulate a base and subsequently exercise with the appropriate intensity as the season draws near.

Once the new ski season begins you should obtain a heart monitor like the Suunto Vector with pulse rate because it performs functions that no other heart rate monitors will do: it calculates your own total vertical skied everyday because it contains a fully contained barometric altimeter. The Suunto Vector can even calculate your own cumulative total vertical feet skied for the whole season – how over the top is that?

This sports watch furthermore showcases you your altitude as well as has a built-in compass plus a barometer that prognosticates incoming weather for people that enjoy a ski while in the big mountains.

A Suunto Vector with heart rate is our own top favorite choice for skiers with no contest. Of course, after sharing those thoughts, there are several other heart monitors, such as the Polar FT60 and Polar FT80 that we feel are equally equipped for skiing plus the types of exercises it demands.

Triathlon training sessions, be it short or long course races, will be totally about pacing since we’re referring to two to ten working hours regarding maintained activity. Developing a solid pacing method that will keep you out of your anaerobic tolerance is a key part of pacing. Proceed too quickly, too early and you can’t sustain it. This is where GPS watch technological innovation and bike computer technology come to be a game changer. They provide you with the types of metrics needed to better comprehend and find your optimum pace to help you improve your time. Regardless of whether you select a GPS watch or perhaps a bike computer using a different heart rate monitor has a lot related to funds and how much you would like to mess around because of gadget transfers, especially with the bike to your run. Your data differences between a GPS watch such as the Garmin 310XT and a good bike computer are not obvious as the 310XT performs power output, pulse, speed, distance and also pedal cadence, thus there is nothing absent. Accumulating information in the swim event, specifically in competition, is virtually unattainable so we feel it is best to pay attention to the best pacing equipment for the run segment and also the biking, although Suunto’s Memory belt and several Polar heart rate monitors are ideal for swimming training. Typically the Garmin 310 XT and also the Suunto t6d will be the leading triathlon heart rate monitors in our opinion. Both products supply you with pacing information during both bike and also the run, including pulse rate, pedal cadence, pace, mileage and much more. They can be very reliable which explains why numerous leading triathletes use them. Both heart rate monitors give you most of the basics however the Garmin 310XT provides watts production while the Suunto t6d has post exercise oxygen usage. If you want to choose a separate fitted bike computer and a heart rate monitor watch, as many triathletes do, then we’d suggest a number of different prospective combos. For the bike computer we would consider the innovative Garmin Edge 800 or even the Garmin Edge 500, both offer power, pace, mileage, pedal cadence, and much more. For an affordable computer with good information check out the Polar CS200cad. For the run no watch can top a Polar RS800 run watch with S3 stride sensor. This watch offers you a lot more data and it is the one foot pod to offer stride advice. To get a less expensive running device consider the Garmin FR60 combination with a footpod or even the Polar RS300X with a foot pod. Both offer speed, distance in addition to pulse rate data to provide you with the ultimate pacing improvement. If you are planning to utilize heart rate monitors or perhaps a GPS watch being both the cycling as well as run systems all of us advise getting a device holder for your bike since it will keep you safer and helps to keep your hands around the handlebars.
